Julie & Michael

IMG_654

In getting to meet so many different couples and photographing their weddings, I have been able to see parts of the Bay Area that I might otherwise have never taken the chance to visit.  What makes it even cooler are the stories and reasons as to why these couple’s choose the spots to be photographed at.  Julie and Michael live in and love San Francisco.  We shot the majority of their portraits at Ocean Beach up above the shoreline.  They turned out beautifully and I owe it all to the fondness Julie and Michael have for the area.  You can just see how comfortable they are in that setting, which translated into amazingly romantic photographs.

Perfect window lighting.

Julie has some awesome pieces of furniture in her home.  They made great props.

Michael watching as Julie makes her way down the aisle.

The minister said he felt it to be a bit awkward to address Julie and Michael while they were kneeling in front of him.  He decided to join them and took a seat on the ground.

Keeping things casual.

I couldn’t have scripted a better setting for Julie and Michael’s photographs.  They fit perfectly into that environment.

What a moment.

Off to the party!

This is actually the outside of a preschool.  Julie and Michael both loved its look.

These next few images are priceless.  What a great reception!

Congratulations!

Karis & Ryan 8.22.2009

IMG_328

Karis and Ryan are perfect for each other….they truly are.  There were so many moments throughout their wedding day that were absolutely noteworthy.  From the time Mom saw Karis in her wedding dress, to Ryan’s first glimpse of his bride through a grove of redwoods, and of course we can’t forget the wild party….it was spectacular and so worthwhile to photograph.  As I mentioned before when I posted about their engagement session, what I love the most about these two is the way they laugh together.  At times I found it difficult to hold my camera straight because their laughter was contagious.  It was a honor working with these two.

IMG_013

My assistant Sarah photographed this next photo.  I just love how the hands are helping frame Karis’ face.

IMG_004

It’s hard for me not to get teary eyed when I watch someone else crying. Mom was just so happy to see Karis slipping into her wedding gown. It was a beautiful moment.

IMG_045

Whenever I set up this shot I always hope that the groomsmen can ham it up for the camera.  The Best Man did not disappoint.

IMG_098

I don’t normally post family photographs on my Blog, but this one is worth writing about.  Karis’ parents are divorced, but still have a wonderful relationship.  While I was setting up this shot I heard someone behind me saying, “Now this is the photo that I want!”  I thought, wow how sweet, they want a photo of Dad with his own father. Well, turns out that this was not Dad’s father, but rather his EX father-in-law.  Imagine my embarrassment when I figured this out!  No one said anything until after I was finished photographing them.  Karis said, “I think maybe you wanted my Mom for this picture.”  Everyone thought it was funny and I love how in the final photograph you can see in Karis’ eyes that something is amiss.

Ryan’s first glimpse of Karis.

IMG_201

This was just beautiful.

IMG_203

Santa Cruz Redwoods are always stunning.

Ryan’s brother was their officiant.  He did a wonderful job.

IMG_243

This is hands down my favorite Wedding Party Photograph.  So classic yet so funny!

IMG_321

I love the light in this photograph.  Karis and Ryan are illuminated, while the grove of redwoods creates a beautiful dark background.

More laughter.

I love the light being cast during dusk.

IMG_502

There were so many women on the dance floor doing the splits!

IMG_543

Even though Ryan is smashing a cupcake into Karis’ face it’s as if he is saying, “Sorry Babe.  I don’t really WANT to do it, but since there are so many people watching, I really just HAVE to do it.”

Party time!

This is another one of Sarah’s photographs.  The sky is just gorgeous.

Happy Wedding Day!

Creek & Johnny 8.8.2009

IMG_576

When Creek first met with me I was impressed by how much attention to detail she placed into her wedding.  She was intent on doing things exactly her own way and creating a serene environment for the whole day.  Johnny and Creek held their wedding in Olema, out in West Marin, and I do believe that it was probably one of the most relaxed weddings I have ever been to.  The setting was gorgeous and all of the guests just seemed to be having a wonderful time.  Naturally the day centered around the union of Creek and Johnny, but it was also a celebration of friendship and family.

I love this moment.  The lighting, the composition, the way the flower girl is tending to her basket…it’s all very beautiful.

IMG_011

In this photo you get a sense of the nervous excitement Creek is feeling right before her ceremony.  It’s very subtle and creates an aura of seriousness and joy around her.

IMG_021

Creek’s brother was her Man of Honor.  I love how their arms are linked at the beginning of the ceremony.  You can tell they have a real connection and that both are equally excited about letting Johnny officially join their family tree.

IMG_196

The vows that Creek and Johnny spoke were a perfect expression of who they are as a couple.

IMG_224

I love the looks on their faces.

IMG_250IMG_256

This spread at the cocktail reception was amazing!  It was seriously the best cheese I have ever tasted.  I believe that Humboldt Fog made all of the cheeses.

IMG_276IMG_279IMG_286

The speeches were wonderful, but what I loved the most were Creek and Johnny’s reactions.

IMG_398IMG_420

I am so glad we waited until the light was just right to photograph their portraits.  Not only was the sun at a good spot, but Creek and Johnny were just glowing from the fabulous time they were having at their wedding.

IMG_509IMG_539

This ring belonged to Creek’s Oma.  It is seriously amazing.  I also loved the choices they made for their wedding bands.

IMG_567IMG_568

Right before I was ready to head out I passed by where the catering had their station set up and there was this great door with beautiful light hitting at just the right spot.  Johnny wasn’t too far behind and I asked him if he didn’t mind just a few more photos.  I am so happy he let me photograph him one more time.

IMG_603IMG_604IMG_605

When I look back at these photos years from now, this is the image that will remind me the most of Creek and Johnny.  It just captures who they are and how much they love being with each other.

IMG_610

May you two always remember to share laughter and love throughout the many years of your marriage.

These are the Moments…

~Mabel Copeland was born 10.10.2009~  Thea and I have known each other for 10 years now.  She was actually the first person I ever met my freshman  year at Cal Poly, SLO.  I am so grateful for her friendship and all of the support she has given me in these past years.  It was real happiness that I felt this afternoon watching Thea and Dirk hold their brand new baby girl.  It’s always striking to me to realize how our roles change when new life is brought into this world.  Today Thea became a Mother and Dirk became a Father.  Parents become Grandparents, sisters become Aunts, and grandparents are officially Great.  While I sit here and edit these photos I am reminded of why I love photography so much.  It’s these moments, when real life takes place, that I capture.  It’s when life truly is beautiful.  These are the moments.
