Westin St. Francis Wedding: Jennifer & Kyle Lawrence

IMG_001

When I first met up with Jen & Kyle they were living in a lovely apartment near Ghiradelli Square, and were both brimming with excitement over their wedding at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in Union Square.  During that first meeting Kyle pulled up the hotel’s website and we perused through the galleries of the lavish ballrooms (so gorgeous).  He even asked me if I had ever heard of Monique Lhuillier (of course!) and he looked so proud when he showed me Jen’s ML dress online.  How cute is that?!  Well, as fate would have it, changes at their work took both Jen and Kyle down to Los Angeles, where they now live.  What started out as a local celebration became somewhat of a destination wedding and they did a FABULOUS job planning such an amazing wedding day experience.

On a personal note, as I review all of these photographs I can’t help but feel some pride for how much I have learned this past year.  Knowing that Jen and Kyle’s wedding would be during one of the shortest days of the year, I had to be more creative with the lighting equipment I brought to photograph their wedding.  Being a California Wedding Photographer is a quite the blessing since the majority of my photography takes place outdoors and I can utilize the abundance of natural light.  Additionally, Jen and Kyle were so in love with the Westin that I knew the photographs we shot inside of the hotel would be the images they would absolutely treasure.  I also had to keep in mind that they were both hoping to have some images with a “SF Union Square” feel so I needed to be able to fit those into the photo time line.  Oh, and it did rain a bit that day as well.  It was definitely a lot to keep in mind while trying to capture the sentiments and emotions of the day…..it makes my head spin just thinking about it right now!  So my husband JP and I arrived at the hotel with lights, stands, backdrops, softboxes, worklights, extension cords…….and the rest of my usual camera equipment ready to take the day by the storm.  And I am happy to report that it was a success.

By the way, I really can’t thank JP enough for spending his weekend helping me out.  He did such a great job coordinating the transporting of so much equipment and I am so happy that this Vice Principal doesn’t mind moonlighting as a Wedding Photographer’s assistant every now and again.

What a GORGEOUS wedding dress!

Jen’s amazing ring alongside her mother’s engagement ring.  Very sweet.  I love my Macro Lens!

Ready for the Big Day.

In between taking photographs of Kyle (by himself) and then the group shots of Groomsmen, I took a step back and snapped this image.  It’s probably my favorite of the whole series.

IMG_060

Here come the ladies!  Boy did we draw a ton of attention.

IMG_168

How fun is this next shot?  Jen and her girls did such a great job acting kinda sassy.

IMG_176

Just Lovely.

IMG_193

The room for the ceremony was beautiful.  The lighting and decor lent such a noble feel to it.

IMG_242

Now for some portraits!  Such drama, such romance.

IMG_296

I LOVE these next few images of Jen.  She is quite the model and reminds me of a princess in these photographs.

For their engagement session we took a photo at this same staircase that Jen and Kyle both loved.  They were both sitting on the steps, while Jen, through the reflection in the mirror, was looking at the camera and Kyle was looking at her.  Jen wanted to replicate the photo and we varied it a bit for the wedding version.

IMG_304

More reflections and romance.

IMG_309

A small glimpse into what their reception looked like.

IMG_326

I always enjoy these candid moments during the speeches.

IMG_349

Best. Cake. Ever.  Seriously, this cake was phenomenal.  The floral design was inspired by Jen’s gown and I believe the flavors were Red Velvet and Vanilla cake with Caramel swirl.  JP and I tasted a slice of the Caramel Swirl tier and I was literally giddy over how amazing it was.  I swear if I Dream of Cake had a cafe/bakery where I could drop in for a slice, I would probably make a weekly trip into the city to indulge my sweet tooth!

IMG_350

Aside from this being a cute photo of Jen and Kyle’s first dance, I love how in the background you can see the guests watching/snapping pics, and it gives an even bigger view of what their first dance was like.

IMG_364

Every now and again I have a very polite wedding guest ask me if the flash on their camera bothers me while I am photographing.  My answer is always no, in fact sometimes I really enjoy the effect of having even more ambient light on my subjects.  Like this image for instance.  To me it has such a “hollywood red carpet” feel and I think it gives the image a glamorous look as well.

IMG_370

Time for some party photos!

IMG_542

Concluding with a little more Drama and Romance.

Jen & Kyle – You two are an amazing couple.  Wish you all the Best!

Kristen & Jeff: Engagement Session at Bodega Bay

IMG_74

Last night I met up with Kristen and Jeff to go over some details concerning their wedding photography and it occurred to me that I hadn’t posted their engagement photographs.  March was quite the busy month…trips to Vegas, Sacramento, and San Diego, along with a horrible bout of the flu.  Oh, and I shot a wedding as well!  Definitely glad that life is slowing down a bit and I can focus more attention on this blog…well that’s the plan at least.

So back to Kristen and Jeff – We met last January at Ted (Jeff’s brother) and Kari’s gorgeous winter wedding.  While I was photographing the family portraits, Debbie (Ted and Jeff’s mom) was very adamant about including Kristen in the family shots.  At that point I knew a wedding was on the horizon!  Fast forward to 2010 where Kristen and Jeff are set to be wed in June.

Jeff wanted very much to have the engagement photographs taken in a beach setting.  I let him take the reins on finding the location and he certainly did not disappoint.  I still can’t believe how amazing the sunset looked as we stood photographing on some cliffs jutting into the ocean.  Here’s how our session turned out:

I am just loving how natural this photograph feels.  This laughter is genuine.

I’ve decided that the light in this next series is Beachy Romantic (my own special term).

Some playful candids.

As we were walking back to the car, I looked at the sky and remarked at how blue it appeared.  I couldn’t miss capturing Kristen and Jeff against this backdrop.

Jeff is such a Romantic

IMG_49

Poor Kristen was freezing at this point!  But I absolutely love how the wind is whipping her hair around in this image.

IMG_54

A little more wind and romance.

IMG_55

You can’t even tell Kristen is shivering like crazy right here!  She pulls off the happy bride so easily.

IMG_57

Just lovely.

They look so peaceful right here.

It’s going to be a beautiful June wedding for you both.  Can’t wait!

Wilhelm Family Portraits: La Jolla, Ca

IMG_037

This is my perfect portrait session.  I love the balance between the photographs where I am trying to direct (more like corral) the children, and the images I make that actually seem to capture their true personalities.  I love the moments, be them playful or thoughtful, between siblings and parents.  This is what makes a family and I love documenting it.

I am so proud of these photographs I shot for the Wilhelm family.  Between singing Baby Beluga with Kate and discussing Indiana Jones with Luke, I had a fabulous time.  I shot in one of my favorite beach locations down in San Diego, which has never failed me in producing a phenomenal sunset.  When I came home to edit these photographs, what struck me most is how much they remind me of being a child.  For me, these photographs evoke that careless, light feeling of spontaneity. Enjoy…..

IMG_025

Luke is one silly guy.  When I photographed him last year, I really had to work hard to convince him to cooperate with me.  This year, he was happiest when I had him posing in whichever way he liked.  I love him jumping for the camera and I couldn’t have asked for a better facial expression.  However, it was our agreement that after the jumping, he would get to do some break dancing.

IMG_026

Kate is just delightful.  I could not get enough of those blond curls!  Last year, Kate was just a little baby, now she is such a conscientious, beautifully spirited, little girl.

IMG_039

I can’t say enough about this next photo.  For me, this is childhood and truly beautiful.

IMG_038

IMG_043

I gave it a fighting chance….I tried my best to get some photographs with the whole group – Luke, Kate, and their mom Kristie.

IMG_049

For the most part, this next image is more indicative of what I captured of the three of them.  And doesn’t this seem more realistic of what parenthood is like?

IMG_050

This is dream lighting…it doesn’t get much better than this.

IMG_068

Considering how crowded this beach was, I am happy with the effect of the next few photographs.  It’s as if this stretch of beach is only there for Kate and Luke’s discovery….

IMG_070

….And of course their enjoyment.

Thanks Wilhelm Family!

Exploring the California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco

academy-of-sciences-san-francisco-aquarium-1

I’ve determined that I need to post more personal photos, if only to force me to go through the photographs I take of my own child and actually do something with them!  Poor kid, you would think that I have a bazillion portraits and photos of him, but sadly, that just isn’t the case.  Part of the reason is because I want to experience his life through my “eyes” rather than via a viewfinder.  Plus I am way more interactive when I am not behind a camera.  But it is a goal of mine to document more of his life, our life, so here is the first of (hopefully) many installments of photographs depicting Grayson’s childhood.

Paulina, my good friend and colleague, and I have been talking about visiting the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco for months now.  Last Friday our schedules finally coincided and we were able to plan a whole day at the museum.  Grayson loved getting to play with Caleb (they’ve always gotten along really well) and had such a fun time exploring the place.  Here are a few of my favorite photographs from the day.

The Rain Forest exhibit at the Academy of Sciences is just amazing.  It is so well designed and butterflies are probably (at least for me) the best part.  Paulina claimed these two were mating.  I’m not sure, but obviously don’t mind having racy photographs of butterflies on my blog.

This guy over here stood so still for me while I snapped several close ups.

I’m not sure what Grayson is saying, but Paulina sure looks enthusiastic!

Love these next two of Caleb.

The hand holding only lasted for an instant, but luckily I was standing right behind them, camera in hand, and metered correctly for the lighting.

Can’t believe how much they look like big boys in this photo.
